When you purchase a sofa you’ll pick a style that matches a preconceived theme or style for the room, choose a place for it, and voila! You’re done right?

Not necessarily. The sofa is the crux of the living room; it’s an essential furnishing that dictates to some extent how the rest of the room is organised and styled. Purchasing, and choosing the placement of the sofa is only the first step, as much of the room’s décor is then shaped around it. Besides, factors such as cost and available space may prevent you from purchasing the perfect sofa, or maybe you’re redecorating a room but don’t want to purchase entirely new furnishings. Either way more creativity is required to achieve the desired look.

With this in mind, today we’ll be running through different ways you can style your sofa so that you can blend your new or old settee seamlessly into your room’s chosen style. Let’s get started…

1. Pillows

Pillows are the corner stone for customising a couch, therefore choosing a few pillows is essential. A few choice pillows can have a huge impact on the overall style of the room, as with the example above where the blue pillows combine with the other accents to infuse the beige room with bright colour.

Pillows can be used to add different textures for more variety in the room, as well as colour, but the colour will depend heavily on the rest of the room’s décor and chosen palette. However, be careful not to go overboard with pillows; eight might look nice on your small couch, but it’s highly impractical!

2. Framing

Large lamps, potted plants or other furnishings can be placed at either side of the sofa to create a framing effect. This doesn’t alter the settee itself, but affects how the couch is integrated into the rest of the room and helps to make it a focal point.

3. The coffee table

As with framing, the choice of coffee table doesn’t affect the sofa itself, but it has an impact on how the couch interacts with the rest of the room.

An eye-catching coffee table – such as the one above – can be used to help solidify the seating area as a focal point in the room while distracting from the sofa itself; perfect for highly thematic décor or for drawing attention away from a boring settee.

4. Throws

Throws are a simple, effective way to adorn a sofa, hide a boring couch or blend the colour scheme together – as with the example above.

5. The right rug

The right rug placed in front of the sofa can make a world of difference. The choice of rug in your living room may seem a little unrelated to the topic at hand, but not when you take a look at the example above.

The interior designers have chosen the same striking pattern for the rug and throw pillows creating an eye-catching focal point, while blending the sofa into the room’s décor.

6. Art

Hanging artwork behind the sofa can detract attention from a boring settee by creating a focal point, or as above, blend it beautifully with the rest of the room’s décor when combined with the right pillows.
