Probably the most fun part of designing a new home is the decor. It's an exciting time, choosing your favourite colours, picking furniture, going antique shopping, and it's also a great opportunity to express your creative side and put a personal stamp on your home. There are however several common pitfalls that can mean the decor doesn't work quite as well as you might have hoped.

We're all prone to making these mistakes, and there's no shame in admitting it, but we do want to do everything we can to avoid them where possible, which is exactly what we're talking about in today's article. We're going to take a look at some beautiful homes that have dodged these common decorating traps, and talk about how they did it, and once your armed with the know-how of our homify professionals you can be sure that you'll never make these mistakes again in your own home.

1. Too much clutter

As a general rule, less is more when decorating your home with ornaments and knick-knacks. Unless you're decorating a den or rumpus room you want to be sparing and tasteful with ornaments, because displaying too many will create visual clutter that's off-putting and ruins the effect.

We know sometimes it can be hard to put that family heirloom in storage, but you have to be honest with yourself about whether it's adding or detracting from the impact of your decor.

2. Not testing the colour palette

There are lots of great tools to aid us in choosing a colour palette for our home like colour swatches and 3D rendering, and it can be a lot of fun imagining what it will look like on the wall. However the fact of the matter is, you'll never truly know how it looks in your home until the paint has been applied. This is because there are so many variables in how we perceive a colour, such as natural lighting, the size of the room, and the colours used for the furnishings.

Always test the paint on the wall of your home before you commit to it to ensure you don't end up making an expensive and time consuming mistake!

3. Inappropriate furniture choices

While it can be tempting to get that king size bed or an enormous sofa for the living room, first you have to ensure that it's going to fit in your home. This doesn't necessarily mean checking that you can get it through the door, but rather considering how much space there will be to move around it, and whether or not it's going to overwhelm and cramp a room.

You always want to be aiming for as much free floor space as possible, regardless of the size of the room, so be sure to measure up every potential purchase before committing to an item.

4. Overdoing the matching decor

It's true that thematic unity and achieving a cohesive aesthetic are two of the cornerstones of interior design, but that doesn't mean you should match every single item in the room. It's still important that your room has variation and texture to keep things exciting, and make sure your home doesn't end up looking like a chain restaurant. Consider varying the colours of your bed linens, rugs, and curtains, using complementary rather than identical tones.

5. Inadequate lighting

A little bit of light can make all the difference to a decor. It can change our perception of the colour palette, or illuminate our favourite ornaments, and yet too often it is treated as an afterthought. Not only that, but as you can see here lighting can be a decoration in itself! So be sure to take a look at what's available and find lights that will suit your decor, and keep it welcoming and bright.

6. Rushing the process

We know that decorating your home is exciting, but it's important to carefully consider every aspect of the decor before committing to anything. First get yourself a plan that includes the styles and colours you may want to use, and then sit on it for a while.

When you're absolutely sure on the direction you want to go in take every individual step slowly, from picking the colours for the walls to choosing furniture. That way you won't make any silly mistakes, and you can be sure you're going to love your decor years down the track!

Now that you've got the knowledge, you're ready to get busy! For more great interior decorating tips check out this article on movie inspired bedrooms.
