It can be difficult to incorporate natural light into your home's design when you are planning construction on a narrow, slender site. But, today on homify we bring you a home that defies expectations: working with a small microsite, the architects have managed to create a bright and airy interior that basks in abundance of natural light. It's innovative, it's ingenious and it demonstrates that you really can do a lot with a little.

The talented team from KOTORI also works hard to design homes with an earthquake resistant construction method – a critical factor when working in the Japanese context. A simple home, small and cosy, with a refined and natural aesthetic – let's take a look…

The street facade

The main facade occupies the north road facing edge of the home. The simple white exterior and sleek mono pitch roof gives the home a subtle contemporary appearance. Almost window-less, it provides an impenetrable and private enclosure. The home itself is set back from the street, and the main entrance is set back even further; sheltered by the underbelly of the protruding second level that gives a sense that it is almost floating.

The entry lobby

The simple white space draws in some raw, exposed materials: a rich natural timber and rough, cast concrete. This transitional space provides a threshold between outside and in, suspending those who enter between the atmosphere they have just left and the more private realm they are about to enter. The change in material at the step poetically marks this transition.

The kitchen

The kitchen takes a central position in the home, forming a social locus about which the family and guests can gather and share in the activity of cooking and enjoying food together.

The aesthetical is minimal and a touch industrial. The timber kitchen island is topped with a stainless steel bench surface that glistens in the bright white space.

Open plan living

The kitchen helps comprise the greater open plan living space that is free flowing and wonderfully connected. The rich timber flooring is carried up to the window bench. The Scandinavian-styled furniture also adopts as its material of choice.

The garden facing facade

Before we conclude this tour, let's step back outside, this time to the backyard. The enclosed deck area provides another threshold space, mediating inside and out and providing a space where one can enjoy the fresh air with protection from the elements. The glass doors, complete with recessed heads and sills, create an almost seamless transition.
