If there's one thing that all cultures share in common, it's the importance of shared meals. Coming together as a family or with good friends to eat a good meal, swap personal stories, and discuss the latest news is a ritual that has special significance no matter where you're from. Because of this the kitchen is considered the beating heart of every home, and while different cuisines may dictate different priorities in terms of layout and appliances, wherever you are it's important to have a practical and functional kitchen.

We can take inspiration from these different cultures and approaches to kitchen design to inspire our homes, and create something unique. That's why today we're focusing on American kitchens, to show you what makes them different, and what lessons we can take away from their distinctive style. There are certain things that all American kitchens share in common, for example because Western cuisine has an emphasis on baking and roasting, you'll always find an oven, while layout and design are informed by a global awareness of trends, representing the confluence of the variety of different cultures that have emigrated to the United States. So join us as we take a look at some of the best examples here on homify to provide inspiration and a new perspective.

1. Timber and grey

This kitchen has a decor that makes a strong statement with a neutral colour palette defined by natural timber colours and polished concrete tiles. The inherent variation in grain and hue of the timber provides depth and character, while the hardwood floors have been painted in a light grey to match the furniture and walls, creating a kitchen with a unified aesthetic.

2. Charming vintage style

One thing all of these kitchens share in common is a huge amount of storage space, with cabinets mounted on the wall, as well as below the counter. This allows you to keep countertops clear for preparation, and prevent your kitchen from becoming crowded and messy. It also reduces visual clutter, making for a more relaxed and practical environment. This kitchen has a charming vintage aesthetic defined by those gorgeous cabinets, and adorable decorations.

3. Pure white

White is a great colour for kitchens because it makes the space feel far bigger due to the way it reflects light around the room. This kitchen is decorated almost entirely in white, except for those Mediterranean tiles which add a rustic dimension to the decor.

4. Monochrome

In here we find a modern twist on shaker cabinets, an American classic with over a century's worth of history, guided by principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. The colour scheme uses the lighter side of the monochrome spectrum, with alternating white and grey cabinets, polished concrete tile flooring, and a high sheen grey brick backsplash. This kitchen also features a television mounted on the wall above the dining area so that you can catch up on the news before heading out for the day!

5. The interplay of textures

The designers of this kitchen have contrasted the textured golden backsplash and counter with a parquet floor and white flat panel cabinets, creating an interesting interplay between the different elements of the decor, and it looks stunning! Though small this kitchen makes great use of space, with every spare inch used for storage and a design that wraps around the entire room, finishing with a breakfast bar that looks out the window.

6. Contemporary style

In this fabulously modern design we find yet more textural interplay, with variation between the tiles used for the backsplash, and the cabinets alternating between a unique grainy texture and high gloss white. This makes for a dynamic decor with lots of energy and vitality. The oven is mounted above floor level, a slightly safer option that cuts down the risk of burning yourself as you awkwardly pull out hot trays.

7. A vibrant burst of colour

Backsplashes have a similar decorative function in the kitchen as feature walls, allowing you to introduce bold colours and patterns in small bursts that would otherwise overwhelm the room. Here they have broken up a sleek white design with pink and black tiles that give this space a whole lot of personality.

8. Spacious and open

As kitchens are often small spaces, leaving them open to the rest of the house is a good way to avoid them feeling claustrophobic, as we see in this spacious design that allows light and air circulation throughout the home, and that makes the kitchen feel positively massive. White and grey is clearly a favourite in modern design, and in this kitchen it looks fabulous as ever.

9. Shabby chic meets minimalism

With the hardwood floors giving this space a homely and organic vibe this kitchen features an innovative blend of shabby chic and contemporary minimalism, with a high gloss white kitchen design with flat panel cabinets juxtaposed with colourful vintage furniture for the dining table.

10. A masterclass in design

Every little element of this design has been carefully considered to create a harmonious and visually interesting whole, from the timber cabinets and charred hardwood floor, to the textured concrete counter and backsplash, to the adorable pot plants positioned above the range hood.

11. Fun and funky

If possible it's a great look using the same kind of timber for as many elements in the kitchen as possible, with the stools, cabinets, and floor in this kitchen all sharing the same gentle tone. This kitchen also features a fun mural on the wall, a great way to put a personal stamp on the space.

12. Spacious and open

With an open plan design, this kitchen was free to sprawl across a far greater space, spreading out the cabinets and appliances so that it never feels cramped or awkward. You'll notice that despite the vintage feel of the decor, the kitchen itself is entirely modern and contemporary, and yet the two styles complement each other well.

13. An industiral fridge

Regardless of size, fridges somehow always end up packed to the brim, but this massive fridge and oven unit may just solve that problem! If you love to entertain this is the design for you, with everything well spaced for a functional and convenient kitchen perfect for preparing large meals for all your guests, and an open plan approach that allows you to still be social and enjoy yourself!

14. Compact and practical

With careful planning this kitchen manages to fit everything into one compact unit, leaving there rest of the room open and spacious. The entire home features stone cladding details throughout, and their use in the backsplash really ties the decor together.

15. Sophisticated in green

The subdued olive green used for this kitchen gives it an elegance that is enhanced by the sophisticated furniture choices, while bursts of yellow introduce some personality and vigour.

16. Earth tones

In this kitchen we find an earthy colour palette that's reminiscent of the seventies, while the design of the cabinets and counter, as well as the hanging lamps, are all thoroughly modern. Earth tones like chocolate, coffee, and tobacco make for a rich decor that's grounded and comforting.

17. Shimmering lights

This incredibly compact kitchen uses high sheen surfaces to reflect that delicate light fixture, making the whole area sparkle with shimmering light.

18. Stunning decoration

This kitchen is clearly the work of ambitious decorators, as the combination of the timber floor, concrete coloured cabinets, and those beautiful exotic tiles used for the backsplash combine for a truly unique look.

19. Fun and funky

With a white base, this kitchen introduces bursts of pastel colour to create a fun and funky vibe to complement the almost futuristic furniture.

20. Burgundy decor

This entire open plan living area is defined by high gloss burgundy cabinets, as the kitchen is split into two separate modules. This way you can space out the kitchen instead of cramming it into one corner, a clever method for homes with limited available space.

There's so many different approaches to the basic design of the American kitchen, and now it's time for you to put your own twist on it! For more great tips check out this article on making your home more cosy.
