These days tiny homes are becoming the norm rather than the exception, as the property market struggles to keep pace with the unprecedented growth of urban centres. At the same time everyone deserves a spacious and comfortable home, and while a small floor plan certainly makes this a more difficult goal to achieve, it is by no means impossible, and today we're going to prove it!

Sometimes all you need to make a small home feel twice the size is careful arrangement, clever furniture choices, and creative decorating. One thing that makes a huge difference is using sliding doors. Traditional hinge doors require a lot of negative space for the outward swing of the door, reducing furniture choices, and making the room feel more cramped when the door is open, but a sliding door eliminates all of these problems, and does it while looking gorgeous, just see for yourself!

1. Thin wooden slats

Here we find a door constructed from thin wooden slats that allow for light and air penetration, maintaining circulation in the home, but functionally separating this area from the hallway.

2. Glass sliding doors

Glass sliding doors are a great idea because not only do they save on the negative space created by a swinging door, they also keep visual contact with the rest of the home, making the room feel much bigger.

3. An incredible design

Sliding doors are but one of the amazing interior solutions employed to make this space feel so much bigger than it is, including partial room dividers and a unique interior architecture defined by beautiful timber.

4. Trendy and stylish

Opaque glass sliding doors allow the light to pass through while maintaining privacy, making them a great idea for bedrooms in smaller homes, especially when they look as trendy as this one!

5. Interior windows

Staircases are often dark and cold places, but by using glass walls with sliding doors you can open them up to the light, and create a warm, welcoming home.

6. Simple construction

These sliding doors feature a very simple mechanism not unlike curtains, although they are far better at trapping heat and reducing noise.

7. Pure white

These white screens match the pure white decor perfectly, and because they are so large opening them effectively removes a wall, allowing this home to become one large room if desired.

8. Charming timber

With a glass wall decorated with lush pot plants they have installed a very simple timber sliding wall to create a natural, organic look.

9. For small bedrooms

Bedrooms often end up being the smallest room in the house when you have limited floor space, but a large sliding door like this completely opens the space up so that it doesn't feel claustrophobic.

10. Traditional Eastern design

This home is inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, with a tatami matt sitting area enclosed by timber frame sliding doors that are a fantastic update on this classical design.

11. For the ensuite

Space is always at a premium in the bedroom, so using a sliding door for the en suite will free up a lot of precious floor area.

12. Translucent glass

With elegant thin frames this sliding door uses translucent glass with a square pattern that adds a decorative element, and provides privacy and light penetration.

13. A self contained en suite

If you don't have an en suite in your bedroom, why not build one like they have here? Barely bigger than a closet this self contained room is more like a piece of furniture, and the natural grain of the timber used for the sliding door looks stunning.

14. A sophisticated decor

We love this home, it has an incredibly sophisticated decor, yet still finds room for quaint ideas like the lamp mural. The sliding doors too are a creative solution, we once more find opaque glass that closes off the room, but because we can still see a blurry image of what waits beyond it doesn't feel oppressive.

15. And wide open

And when you slide the door all the way open it completely disappears into the wall, resulting in an open space with no evidence that this once was a separate room!

Sliding doors are a great way to save space, but they also look fantastic, making them ideal for homes of any style or decor. For more great tips check out this article on surprising furniture that will make your home one of a kind!
