This luxury boutique hotel was designed by Taller Estilo Arquitectura, a young studio founded in Merida, mexico in 2004. They aim to create spaces that are relevant for the lives of the 21st century human being, whether they are building from scratch or, as in this case, adapting existing structures. These spaces are not intended to be monuments, but habitable spaces that engage all 5 senses, provoking emotion not causing sensation. They want their designs to be relevant in a Latin-American context. They source local materials not because of trends, but because of conviction. They assert their belief that all materials have their own expression and it is the architect's job to get the best out of them. And that they did! Let's take a look inside.

Bright and tropical

The 19th-century nobleman’s mansion was restored and exquisitely appointed. It is located five blocks from Barrio de Santiago, one of the main historic sites in the colonial sector of Merida. Preserving as much of the original Spanish colonial design as possible, the architects have created a place rich in history but with all the conveniences of contemporary living and more! Arched terraces, tropical gardens, water features and a pool – there's not much more one could ask for on a luxurious getaway!

The portico terrace

The incredible portico structure that wraps around the building, enclosing the courtyard is restored to its original beauty. The grand arched openings frame views into the lush, tropical garden. Providing shade in the hot summer months, this becomes a wonderful layer that mediates inside and out. One could say it acts as a thick threshold, extending the moment of crossing and creating a space that feels neither entirely inside nor entirely outside. The wonderful tiles pick up the red hue of the buildings facade, and the exposed roof structure is striking in black.

Original grandeur meets contemporary comfort

Locally crafted furniture and contemporary art compliment the colonial style interiors. The steel and glass balustrade, wrapping up the stairs and around the mezzanine, is a sleek expression of modernity. Set against the bright tiles and exposed structure of the ceiling, it creates a delightful juxtaposition that expresses both the grandeur of the past and the conveniences of contemporary living. The bedroom mezanine

The mezzanine bedroom enjoys direct access off the living space below whilst achieving a sense of removal. The act of ascending the stairs to reach the sleeping spaces creates, both, a physical and psychological separation. The mezzanine was likely a new addition, hence natural timber floors take the place of the bright tiles existing elsewhere in the building. Everything else adheres to a refined, white colour palette, except for a few splashes of colour found in the furniture and artwork. For more bedroom ideas, take a look here!

The media room

This time descending the stairs, one is offered the same sense of removal. The media room attains a feeling of being hunkered down. What a cosy escape from the more open spaces of the home, where one can enjoy a movie or catch up on some work. And, doesn't the bright red couch clashes with the pink stair in the most wonderful of ways?
