Think that the colours of your living room’s scatter cushions, hallway rugs, bedroom linen and other rooms are simply there to add style and visual substance? Think again! Not only are they a direct reflection of your personality, but they also influence your mood and thoughts every day – subtly, yet surely.

That’s the science behind colour psychology: that colours affect us all in many ways, depending on age, gender, ethnic background and climate. That’s why it’s so important to put some thought into the hues you bring into your home, as seasoned interior designers/decorators will vouch.

Now, if there’s one thing we know, it’s that a home needs to have a calming influence on all who enter. And even though your choice in furnishings and décor also play a role, it’s the colours that we are focusing on today.

So, let’s find out which calming colours are the best choices for your home’s rooms, and exactly how they influence your mood.

1. Room colours and their effects

Before we highlight the best calming colours for your home, let’s first discover some more facts about the power of hues.

Colours act in three basic ways:

• active,

• passive,

• and neutral.

What makes playing with colours fun is that you can easily match every room’s colours to your personal desires, your taste and the room’s purpose. Thus, should your aim be to have a serene effect in a space, you need to resort to calming colours for the walls, furnishings and decorations.

Also bear in mind that while light colours are expansive and airy (helping to make rooms feel larger and brighter), dark hues are sophisticated and warm (ensuring a more intimate feeling for bigger spaces).

2. Calming colours: Blue

Definitely one of the most popular choices as far as calming colours go, blue is ideal for helping to calm the mind and reduce tension. Blue is said to bring down blood pressure and relax the heart rate.

Best used in: Bedrooms, due to its ability to help people sleep. However, as pastel blue can come across as a little chilly (especially in rooms that receive little to no natural light), be sure to balance it out with warmer hues for furnishings and fabrics.

Warmer blues (like periwinkle or violet) and brighter blues (such as cerulean and turquoise) can encourage relaxation in social areas (i.e. living rooms and kitchens).

3. Calming colours: Violet

As violet is quite close to the blue family, it is also effective in stimulating a peaceful feeling and bringing inner balance to the soul. Just keep in mind that you don’t want to pick a violet hue with too much black in it, as it will result in a cold environment.

Best used in: Bedrooms, when used in lighter versions, such as lavender and lilac. As soon as purple resorts to deeper hues (like eggplant), the ambience of the room becomes rich, dramatic and sophisticated.

4. Calming colours: Pink

Think that pink is only reserved for little girls’ bedrooms? Although it’s perfect for a playful and feminine vibe, pink (in its lighter hues) is one of the most popular calming colours, proving to be quite effective in soothing the energy in a room, especially in Feng Shui.

Best used in: Bedrooms, although the right tones of pink can look beautiful in just about any room. If you’re scared that a complete pink overhaul might seem too girly, start with smaller amounts, like scatter cushions in a soft hue (like lemonade or crepe), or pink flowers for a beautiful accent piece.

5. Calming colours: Green

Because it symbolises nature, green is visually soothing and ensures a feeling of calmness and tranquillity. Think about how soothing it is to sit in on a park bench surrounded by lush trees and neatly trimmed lawns.

Best used in: Almost any room in the house, as green is considered the most restful colour for the eye. In the kitchen, green can cool things down, while it encourages unwinding in the family/living room. Interestingly, green is believed to help with fertility, making it a great choice for bedrooms.

6. Calming colours: Grey

Most people deem grey as dull, depressing and even cold. However, the truth is that the right hue of grey can provide quite the soothing and cooling vibe. As it’s a neutral colour, it works well with any furnishings and works of art.

Best used in: Any room in the house, from the kitchen and living room to the bathroom, study and bedroom. To liven things up with a grey colour palette, simply add additional colours (like orange and blue) for the décor, and subtract them again to calm things down.
