Who says a fireplace is only meant to be enjoyed during winter? With these fabulous fireplace ideas we’ve gathered, you’ll be spoiled for choice with ideas on how to style up your home’s fireplace – and fire isn’t necessary for all of them.

Of course any fireplace’s function, first and foremost, is to provide adequate heat for a home and its inhabitants. But just like staircases, fireplaces can also become prime focal features, enhancing a space’s décor element in terms of colour, texture and pattern.

Some of the most well-known fireplace ideas include:

• Installing accent lighting to highlight the fireplace

• Offsetting the fireplace in a geometric design

• Painting or tiling the fireplace wall in a bold, contrasting colour

• Adding a mantel over the fireplace (how fantastic for framed photographs, seasonal greeting cards, etc.)

• Adding a slab ledge for seating.

But just in case you’re looking to add extra pizzazz to your living room (or any other room that houses a fireplace), scroll ahead…

1. Fireplace ideas: Minimalist marvel

Being inspired by an outdoor design can result in some pretty amazing features. Just feast your eyes on this futuristic little design! In essence, it’s a simple woodburner-style fireplace that seems very easy for experienced DIYers to fit themselves. All that’s needed afterwards will be a professional to come along and sign off on the work, declaring it safe to use.

A suspended fireplace is nothing new, appealing to small spaces, as it effectively frees up legroom.

2. Fireplace ideas: Stylish shapes

This gas fireplace perfectly echoes the shape of the modern flatscreen television above it. Sleek-white limestone finishes and Platonic Fire Pebbles complete this cosy-yet-contemporary scene superbly.

3. Fireplace ideas: No wood needed

It's both storage and decor. Swap out those heaps of firewood for this sleek design, which is undoubtedly a less messy option.

4. Fireplace ideas: Double duty

This fabulous piece also pulls double duty as a room divider, with both areas getting to enjoy those flickering flames.

5. Fireplace ideas: Work with colours

A wooden design, a mantel for decorative pieces, plus an eye-catching coating of stone grey to help make this fireplace become the room's main focal feature!

6. Fireplace ideas: A luxurious piece

Mantels are definitely the cherry atop a beautiful fireplace, yet they are not considered mandatory. Here we see a striking design (with no mantle in sight) that still manages to catch the eye and introduce a strong sense of luxury into the room, thanks to a decent amount of marble being included.

7. Fireplace ideas: Rustic meets modern

Don’t think that the terms “messy grate” and “dirty hearth” are synonymous with rustic-style fireplaces. Modern designers have come a long way in mastering the art of combining effective heating with stylish aesthetics.

Case in point, this fabulous feature which combines the charm of a woodburner with the contemporary aesthetics of a modern fireplace design. Set into a dedicated chimney breast, this black metal box ensure a neat and ordered piece, but still manages to be the cosy heart of the home.

8. Fireplace ideas: A corner cutie

As this design proves, fireplaces don’t have to be fitted in the centre of a wall to enjoy attention. Even awkward spaces and weird little corners can do!

See how this contemporary design makes perfect use of a corner area, becoming part of the room’s décor and even having its own little complementary log store.

9. Fireplace ideas: A delightful throwback

Not all fireplaces need to flaunt a modern-as-can-be look. Think about vintage-like designs that we’re so used to seeing in country homes or Scandinavian log cabins. In a lot of those cases, what is used for transmitting heat (and charm) is a simple little woodburner.

Well now, thanks to clever designers thinking outside the box, they have taken the charm of said woodburners and given them a slightly more modern makeover, resulting in this oh-so-cute example above.

Just imagine the aroma that will be omitted once a log has been thrown into the fire, followed by that wonderful crackling sound that goes a long way in upping our relaxation levels.

10. Fireplace ideas: No roaring fire necessary

Is there any place that candles don’t look lovely? Ever considered placing them in your empty fireplace?

Think about it: you’ll still get that warm glow. And even though it might not be as hot as a traditional fireplace with a roaring fire, you’ll still enjoy a decent amount of heat (depending on the amount of candles being used, of course).

You can cluster as many or as few as you like and they will always look wonderful. If you don't want to light them, consider wrapping some LED fairy lights around them for an equally charming look.

11. Fireplace ideas: No winter? No problem!

Just because it’s decent (and sunny) weather outdoors doesn’t mean your fireplace needs to go into hibernation. Take advantage of that shape and texture and let it up your room’s décor levels.

We are especially fond of this magical design with its ornate frame and colourful Mediterranean tiles. Place some beautiful glass bottles (or vase with flowers, a potted plant, a stunning pot or bowl picked up on your travels, etc.) once there’s no need to use a hot flame.

What a dramatic and lovely look, even though there’s no fire in sight!

12. Fireplace ideas: A bold and embellished look

Just like a fireplace can be a wallflower, so too can it enjoy stardom in a room. And since fireplace are available in numerous shapes and sizes, from simple and elegant, to bold and impressive, we thought we simply had to include an example of the latter!

How would this bold design, with a huge timber mantel, grab you? Its ornate frame already enjoys attention, so the fact that it has an elongated design with a built-in mirror simply adds to the appeal.

See how it comes to life against the stark-white walls and earthy hues of the wooden floor.

13. Fireplace ideas: Brilliance in the bathroom

Who says it’s only a living- or bedroom that can be privy to that crackling fire and enticing glow?  There are many ways to incorporate a fireplace into a bathroom, but we particularly love this design. This piece is a modern take on a traditional look and incorporates a single piece of marble, which looks chic and timeless. Paired with subtle colours and thoughtful ornamentation, this bathroom fireplace might not be the main focal feature here, yet it certainly doesn’t fade away either!
