The bedroom is one of our most personal sanctuaries. It is a place to relax and recharge as well as to share intimate moments with our spouses and partners. The bedroom ought to be personalised your unique tastes because it is a space that is truly your own. Therefore, it should be comfortable and welcoming.

While all of this sounds great, it may not feel so simple if your bedroom is on the small side. In particular, if the bedroom is small and square shaped it may feel like your decorative possibilities are limited once a bed, wardrobe, nightstand, and bookshelf are factored in. Still, we at homify believe that spacial constraints do not have to keep you from achieving a functional, aesthetically pleasing space. That’s why today we’ve prepared a guide specifically tailored to decorating a small, square shaped bedroom. Enjoy!

Moderate décor featuring natural materials

When it comes to adding décor to your bedroom, there are two primary routes we recommend. One is the moderated decorative scheme while the other is vivid.

Let’s begin with the moderate look. By moderate we are specifically referring to a more minimal style of decoration that is rooted primarily in neutral or earthy tones. Moderate colours and minimal patterns have the benefit of helping to create the illusion of space.

Moderate décor does not have to be lacking in character. In fact, there are countless directions you could explore. This moderately decorated bedroom, for instance, is filled with earth tones and natural accessories ranging from plants, furs, and even mounted antlers. Nothing boring about this look!

Vivid decor

If your style is bolder, you don’t have to deny your true preferences just because your room is on the small side. A few carefully selected pieces comprised of vivid shades can help to draw the eye and create a focal point in the room.

We suggest opting for some bright artwork over the bed as we can see in this bedroom by Tatiana Zaitseva Design Studio. Some colourful accent pillows or a bold area rug can do wonders as well. You may even consider working with just one vibrant colour in your bedroom’s colour scheme.

Just be sure not to overdo it because too much craziness can make the room feel more claustrophobic. Still, we are confident that just the right amount of vivid décor can re-energise even the tightest of quarters.

Wallpaper with a pattern

One other way we suggest adding a pop of colour is with patterned wallpaper. The same disclaimer applies, however – be sure not to go too crazy with the colours and patterns!

This moderately patterned yellow wallpaper works nicely because the colours aren’t contrasting each other. This way, the pattern is softened. Another useful technique is to create a feature wall with some patterned wallpaper to add a touch of pizzazz and focus.

Choosing to add the feature wall behind the bed can help to create the illusion of an extended headboard. An alternative to conventional wallpaper is the adhesive sticker mural, which can be a wonderful outlet for expressing your unique sense of creativity through a more customised design.

Additional space

Naturally, we’re sure that the tight spatial constraints are still on your mind at this point, despite how exciting talk of decorating can be. Thus, we are going to take a moment away from our regularly scheduled programming to quell those concerns.

It IS possible to have adequate storage space in the bedroom without having to sacrifice style. There are so many clever ways in this day and age to better utilise the space you have. To give you a short rundown of some ways you might be able to create additional space in your bedroom, it’s all about thinking outside the box. Don’t forget to make use of the vertical space you have by utilising wall hooks and clothing racks.

Also, you likely have an abundance of vacant space underneath the bed. Simply add some decorative canvas boxes like these for easy, accessible storage. You can also find bed frames that allow for storage beneath the mattress itself.

Library in the bedroom

With the idea of creating additional space in mind, let’s look at a decorative option that will add aesthetic dynamism to the space whilst also offering additional storage possibilities. Including a bookshelf spanning across the wall in your bedroom is a visually stimulating move that provides ample space for storing any number of things. Plus, you can use some of the shelf space for personalised décor like photos and other mementos.

We recommend going with white bookshelves, though, because these will take up less perceived space. Naturally, if your walls come in a different colour, you’ll want the shelves to match the predominant shade instead.

Absolutely white

One of the best tricks in the book for making a small space appear more expansive is to paint it white. White helps to reflect existing natural light, too. This effect only adds to the sense of perceived space created in the interior.

You can take this to the next level by decorating with white décor as much as possible. We love this minimal bedroom with white linens. The funky pendulum lights stand out as the only accessories necessary for adding style to the space. You can’t go wrong with white décor, it will inevitably create a pure and tasteful look no matter your design persuasion.
