Planning a bathroom design is about so much more than visual aesthetics (like any professional Bathroom Designer will agree), as functionality also plays a prime role. And that takes us to the wet and dry zones, particularly how to keep them separated as much as possible.

For those not in the know, a bathroom’s dry zone contains the vanity and toilet area. As these are the most frequently used items in the bathroom, it’s vital to keep them dry. The wet zone, on the other hand, is the space in your bathroom where most water-based activities take place, such as bathing and showering. Here is where towels rails need to be kept close to hand.

Let’s take a look at some of the more modern ways, and some golden favourite methods, of separating these two areas of a bathroom.

1. Play with the floor levels

Raising or lowering the floor level of your shower or bath tub helps to create the illusion of a separate zone. However, it can also help to contain any splashing water to its own area and not allow it spill into the dry zone.

2. Invest in glass partitions

A glass pane or screen allows your shower area to remain visually part of the bathroom (as it doesn’t hide it away), yet goes to great lengths to contain spills and splatters. And since there is a myriad of different design options (from frameless contemporary styles to deliciously rustic models), you are sure to find the perfect glass separation screen for your particular bathroom, regardless of its style, size, or layout.

homify hint: Consider etched or frosted glass as opposed to clear glass for a tad more privacy / visual style.

3. A good old bath / shower mat

This one’s been around for goodness-knows-how-long, and the reason for it still being used today is because it works! Simply lay down a decent mat at the mouth of your shower / foot of your tub. The thicker and bigger, the better. Then simply stand on it while drying yourself, or even better: dry yourself while standing in the shower / tub, and simply use the mat for drying your legs and feet.

Easy peasy!

4. Construct a half-wall partition

Similar to a glass screen, a half-wall minimises the splashing of water into the dry zone. Plus, it’s not as visually invasive as a full wall.

Bonus points if you have a half-wall thick enough to accommodate niches for your soaps and shampoos, folded towels, decorative items, etc.

5. Hang a shower curtain

Most definitely a low-cost way of keeping your dry zone dry while sprucing up your bathroom! And in contrast to a glass pane, a shower curtain doesn’t require a lot of space, plus can be quite the striking focal point.

6. Commit to decent lighting and ventilation

Remember that spills and splashes aren’t the only issue you want to avoid in your bathroom – there’s also the problem of mould and mildew, and these can easily cross over from the wet zone into the dry one.

Our recommendation? Install extraction fans which transport your bathroom’s moist air outside; position the windows so they can cross-ventilate the entire space; and invest in decent artificial lighting fixtures to illuminate all corners (in case there’s already a mould spot you’re not aware of).

7. Be clever with your bathroom’s design

When planning your bathroom layout, locate your wet zone as far away from the dry one as possible. This will help to reduce the amount of water being dripped from one to the other. And always position your towel rails within easy reach of the shower / tub.

Also consider the placement of your shower taps. If they’re right underneath the shower head, you will easily get sprayed as soon as you turn on the shower. However, positioning them further away from the shower head, even on the facing wall, cancels out this problem – and the splattering of water!
