Mirror mirror on the wall… who's the fairest of them all? That's what we're asking ourselves today as we look at some fabulous mirror design tricks and how, if you carefully decide how to place them in each room in your house, the outcome can be fantastic!

Whether it's to add more light, create the illusion of more space, or to add some unique wall art into your home, mirrors are a great way to go and as you know, they hold a utilitarian function that typical wall art can't provide.  Did you know that mirrors are one of the easiest ways to add more light into dark space? Even in the smallest of rooms and homes, mirrors can create optical illusions of more space that can revitalise the entirety of your home. Below we have listed different types of mirrors – in all shapes, sizes and designs – in order to prove how beneficial mirrors are when considered a serious part of your interior design scheme.

Mirrors for your living room

Can''t decide on that one, perfect piece of visual art for your living room? Can't afford or don't trust yourself enough to pick out a grand statement piece to impress guests while they're visiting? That's okay – get mirrors to do this for you!

If you take a look at all the possibilities of mirror design today you will quickly realize how many options you have. For large and small living rooms alike, we suggest you opt for large-format mirrors as a statement piece, or do what this designer did and choose a large-scale mirror series as a way to break up the space, add the reflection of more natural light and make a strong artistic statement all in one.

Full wall mirror for your bedroom

For your bedroom, it's always nice to include a mirror for dressing, putting yourself together and trying on different outfits and clothes for days of work or special occasions. For your bedroom, make sure you choose a mirror that is functional in that you can view your entire self without much effort.

Don't worry about the design of the mirror or hanging it perfectly, make things easier on yourself and choose a minimalist or modern mirror that you can simply lean up against the wall for more versatility and accessibility.  Want to redecorate or reorganize your bedroom one day? Great idea! Just pick up your mirror and move it to where you want it.

Circular mirrors for your bathroom

Mirrors are definitely most common in bathrooms as they hold the strict function of helping you get ready in the early mornings and unwind after long days and evenings. Mirrors also handle the elements quite well, and can successfully be exposed to heat and moisture, making them a perfect addition to any bathroom.

We suggest choosing circular mirrors in your bathroom as a way to break up the space and add some creativity.  One circular mirror not enough? That's okay, two or three work great together too and add aesthetic consistency to this bathroom.

Create an illusion with a mirror in the passage way

Mirrors have been used for centuries due, in large part, to their ability to create optical illusions of more space.  Whether they're incorporated into the architectural elements of a typical home, or a grand cathedral in Italy, mirrors can make your space seem double, if not triple the original size.

If you're using mirrors in your home primarily for this reason, think about placing them in the entry way, passage ways and corridors or in the smaller spaces of your home. Take a look at these mirrored double-doors used in this hall – they add both an abundance of light and a great sense of height and depth!

Mirror in your kitchen

The kitchen is an area of the home where mirrors are much less likely to be found and it makes sense as other materials are typically preferred in such a functional area. But while tiles, wood, concrete, linoleum and natural stone dominate kitchen spaces, why not mix things up a bit by adding a great mirror?

Choose a mirrored or reflective-surface backsplash, as seen here, rather than opting for typical tiles and mosaics. Especially in darker kitchens this will help in brightening up the space and mirrors will make splashes and clean-ups easier as you can simply wipe them down with glass cleaner. Mirrors, similar to other materials in kitchens, can also handle wet and dry messes, steam, humidity and heat. What's not to like?

Small mirror in the children's room

As children have less of a use for mirrors in their younger ages, mirrors should be more considered as a mere design element in your children's room. Tons of mirrors come in great colours, shapes and sizes and in other areas of your home where you might be a bit more hesitant to include funky and unique statement pieces – try to use your children's room as the perfect venue to get creative!

Stick with smaller mirrors in children's rooms and let the patterns and shapes do the talking.  Why not be even more artistic in your choices and try a series of delicate patterned mirrors, as seen here?
