This Japanese home may look as contemporary as they come, but there is also a deep acknowledgement of the traditional craft of building homes in Japan. Eschewing decoration, ornamentation, and excessive amounts of space - the home, instead, expresses materials honestly and simply, adopts a refined and minimal aesthetic, and cleverly maximises space.

The relationship with the exterior and the experience of the four distinct Japanese seasons is embedded in the thoughtful design. The incorporation of passive solar design principals means that the interior of the home maintains an optimal living environment without the addition of mechanical and electrical aids.

Now, let's take a look around and see the design finesse and exquisite attention to detail for ourselves!

From the street

The family home is comprised of two volumes, with a small link connecting them. They mirror each other in form, but not size: the main volume is significantly larger whereas the entry volume appears as the little brother.

An all white exterior is crisp and striking, and the natural timber elements ground it back in the natural landscape.

We can also see a deep recess in the larger volume, which forms cover over the patio and adds a sense of depth to the facade.

The industrial kitchen

How great is that kitchen?! It's uber minimal: exuding the sleekest sophistication. But not in a bland or undifferentiated way – it has an unexpected edge.

The floating stainless steel island, with waterfall edge, has an industrial, almost science-lab, quality. It toughens the simple white and timber space up with a whole lot more interest.

Striking Staircase

The stair adds a similar flair in this space as the island does in the kitchen. The steel structure nods towards the industrial, contrasting the otherwise very domestic atmosphere.

This space also occupies a grand double-height volume: it attains a wonderful loftiness. The mezzanine overhead establishes a wonderful connection between the two levels of the home.

Tatami mats

This bedroom space is such a treat! The beautiful tatami mats are rendered in the same material as the walls, giving the space an enclosing, burrow-like atmosphere.

The floor-level, horizontal slot window offers unique perspectives out. There is a thoughtfulness is the orchestration of this space that is second to none.

Back to the exterior

Before we close the book on this home for today, we have one final shot of the exterior – this time a little closer up, and a little later in the day. As dusk starts to fall, we can see the interior contents of the home beautifully illuminated from the street. The view in almost surpasses the views out!

So with that said, our tour through this incredible Japanese home has come to an end. But if you haven't quite had your home fix for the day, you're in the right place! Why don't you take a quick look at The Home that Proves Less Really Can Be More?
