A room at the rear of the house, a previously cold utility brick structure with a dilapidated flat roof has been enhanced thermally, raised in height, and now becomes part of the remodelled kitchen area. Initially this was going be demolished, but has become, as described by one of the children as ‘perky’ in its now proud re-joining with the rest of the house.

A family that has been present during the build during summer holidays, has allowed the family to grow into their new spaces and test them out, and see daily the details and build evolve around them. The new geometries that are now in front of the family create a new expectation that enfolds and stimulates new thoughts as to how the home can continue to change.

At the rear of the house, the dining room connects to an existing lean to kitchen creating dark and uninviting spaces for the family to gather.

Recently I went to visit a current project on site to see how near completion the project is. Seeing it in the flesh and speaking with the client made me realize how remarkable the process is to all involves and how important the committed involvement of all both client and designer is.

The brief was a simple maxim of ‘light, bright and functional’ with the existing rear of house being quite the opposite, when we had the first of many meetings over a period that would inform the house as it is now. The movement through the house was experienced by the couple as of always passing along the linear corridor spaces from front hall, through dining room and kitchen and not being held by any of the spaces. Successful spaces are defined by light, scale, structure and views and being able to create spaces that can adapt as the family needs change.

The removal of the structural wall between dining room and kitchen, together with frameless roof light transforms the spaces to be flooded with natural light and change the way the family interact.

The design process with the client has evolved has allowed them to inhabit the new spaces with 3d modelling of the new designs from start to finish. This greatly assists the decision making and allowing project expectations for programme to remain in place.
